SELF-BELIEF:
If you really believe what you have written is good, there will be others that feel the same way. People never get tired of ‘silly love songs’ so don’t worry that people may think your lyrics are naïve and silly but as I said, only if you really believe they are good!

Basic human feelings are the substance of love songs and most of the time ‘love’ will be your subject matter whether you’re writing subjectively (meaning totally from the heart and not caring what anyone else will think) or, writing objectively (meaning writing what you think people will like and being totally aware of what you are creating).

SEIZE THE MOMENT:
You’ve got to know when you’re hot (being creative) and when you’re not. These are special moments and when they happen – seize them! As soon as an idea comes to you complete it as much as you can on music manuscript paper or music software. If you just jot down a sketch or sing an idea into your mobile phone thinking you will work on it later, you may have forgotten much of it or most importantly, the ‘essence’ of the song when you go back to work on it and no matter how hard you try you can’t get back to that magic moment of inspiration!

I also believe that there is a period in your life when you’re hot and you’ve got to seize that too. Young people feel passionately about all sorts of things and these are important years creatively. As you get older you feel less passionately, so must become more objective in your writing.

BRILLIANCE CANNOT BE TAUGHT:
The craft of music can be taught but let’s be honest, brilliance cannot be taught! Many great songwriters did not go to a music school as pop/rock music schools have only come into existence in recent years.
